Is NEET 2027 CBT Confirmed? Mode, OMR vs Computer Test
What NTA, the Education Ministry, and the Supreme Court filings actually say — and how you should prepare.
Is NEET 2027 CBT confirmed? Short answer: not in an NTA information bulletin. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said in May 2026 that NEET UG would move to a computer-based test (CBT) from 2027. In August 2026 the Centre told the Supreme Court that a final call will come only after a high-level expert panel (chaired by Nandan Nilekani) submits recommendations. Treat CBT as likely and under active consideration, not as a locked exam-day format.
If you are starting Class 11, Class 12, or a drop year for NEET 2027, prepare for both screens and OMR so a late notification does not wreck your mock-test habit.
What has actually been said
| Source | When | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Education Minister (public remarks) | May 2026 | Political intent: OMR called a weak point after the NEET UG 2026 leak / re-exam cycle |
| Media reports on multi-day CBT | Mid-2026 | Possible 5–6 day window, many centres, JEE-style computer labs — not an NTA bulletin |
| Centre affidavit in Supreme Court | August 2026 | No final decision yet; wait for the expert committee and official NTA notice |
| NTA Information Bulletin | Not released for 2027 | Until this PDF is out, pattern, cities, shifts, and mode can still change |
Do not trust WhatsApp forwards that say “CBT 100% confirmed” or “OMR will stay forever”. Bookmark neet.nta.nic.in and wait for the Information Bulletin.
OMR vs CBT: what would change (and what would not)
A mode change is about how you mark answers, not about dropping NCERT.
Likely to stay the same (until NTA says otherwise):
- Physics 45 + Chemistry 45 + Biology 90 = 180 questions, 720 marks
- +4 / −1 marking (as used in recent years)
- NCERT Class 11 and 12 as the syllabus backbone
- Single national rank list after any required normalisation if there are multiple shifts
What CBT would change on exam day:
- No paper booklet and no bubbling on an OMR sheet
- On-screen palette, mark-for-review, and a countdown timer
- Possibly multiple shifts / days instead of one Sunday afternoon paper
- Keyboard, mouse, and screen stamina for 180 minutes
- Strict lab rules (no personal calculators — same as today)
JEE Main already runs this way. NEET’s candidate count is larger, which is why the government keeps stressing inclusivity (centres in smaller towns, practice mocks, enough nodes).
Is NEET 2027 CBT mode confirmed for registration?
No. Registration, city choice, and admit-card rules will follow the 2027 bulletin. Until then:
- Keep documents (photo, signature, Class 12 details) ready the same way as NEET 2026.
- Do not pay anyone who promises “CBT centre booking”.
- Practise full-length tests on a computer or phone, not only on printed PDFs.
How you should practise from today
Whether 2027 stays pen-and-paper or moves to CBT, toppers still win on NCERT + speed + accuracy. The extra CBT skill is interface fluency.
Weekly plan (Class 12 / droppers):
- 2 full-syllabus mocks on screen (180 questions, 180 minutes) — start on MockX free mock tests
- 1 subject mock (Biology is 50% of the paper — see our Biology mock guide)
- Error log: every wrong question tagged NCERT line + why you missed it
- One untimed NCERT pass the next day on those exact pages
If NTA later confirms OMR: you already have timing. Add 4–5 OMR bubbling drills in the last month.
If NTA confirms CBT: you already have click-and-review muscle memory. Add official NTA sample tests the week they go live.
Track days left on the NEET 2027 countdown. Expected window historically is early May — details in NEET 2027 exam date updates.
Normalisation, if there are multiple shifts
CBT at NEET scale almost always means more than one paper. NTA already uses percentile normalisation for JEE Main. If NEET 2027 is multi-shift:
- Do not panic if your shift “felt tougher”
- Rank is compared on percentile, not raw marks alone
- Your job is still: finish 180 questions with high accuracy
Until the bulletin publishes the formula, do not waste hours on fake “normalisation calculators”.
Common rumours to ignore
- “NEET 2027 will be online from home.” No. CBT means a secured centre, not your laptop at home.
- “Syllabus will be halved for CBT.” No official cut. Study the full NCERT map — syllabus overview.
- “Biology will become numerical like JEE.” Unlikely. NEET Biology remains NCERT-heavy MCQs unless NMC/NTA notify a change.
- “You must buy a coaching CBT lab pack.” A phone or school computer plus honest mocks is enough to start.
What to do this week
- Read this page once; screenshot the table for parents.
- Attempt one timed 180-question mock on MockX.
- Write a 1-page “CBT + OMR” backup plan in your notebook.
- Recheck NTA’s site on the 1st of every month until the bulletin drops.
Q1: Is NEET 2027 CBT confirmed by NTA? A: Not yet. Minister-level remarks pointed to CBT from 2027, but the Centre told the Supreme Court in August 2026 that the decision is not final until the expert committee reports and NTA issues a notice.
Q2: Is NEET 2027 computer-based or pen-and-paper? A: Officially undecided. Prepare as if you may face a computer interface, while keeping OMR practice in reserve.
Q3: Will NEET 2027 have multiple shifts? A: Possible if CBT is adopted at full scale. Wait for the Information Bulletin for cities, days, and normalisation rules.
Q4: Does CBT change the marking scheme? A: No change has been notified. Assume 180 compulsory questions and 720 marks until NTA publishes 2027 pattern details.
Conclusion
Search interest for “is NEET 2027 CBT confirmed” is exploding because students want a yes/no. The honest answer is pending official NTA confirmation. Build screen-based full-syllabus mocks now on MockX, keep NCERT first, and ignore leak-era panic. When the bulletin is out, we will update this article the same day.
